A Study on the Effects of the Social Activity of the Elderly to Death Anxiety

Abstract
Objective : The purpose of this study is to verify the influence of the relationship between death anxiety and social participation of the elderly

Methods : An independent variable is set up to social activity participation of elderly people. And anxiety of death is set up to a dependent variable. And was to undertaken to verify the relation among variables by surveying to people over 60 residing in Gwangju city.

Results : To sum up, the results are as follows: First, this study found that sociodemographic variables gave so much influence to the social activity of elderly people. It showed meaningful differences according to gender, educational level, religion, the presence of a spouse, health and economical condition. In the case of gender, man is more active than woman in social activity participation, and in the case of educational level the higher academic background is, the more active social activity participation is, and Elderly people having a spouse and religion are more active than others. Second, the result that analyzed the difference of death anxiety for elderly people showed meaning differences according to educational level, religion, health and economical condition. In the case of educational level the lower academic background is, the higher death anxiety is. Elderly people having no religion have higher death anxiety. In the case of health condition, the worse health is, the higher death anxiety is. In the case of the economical condition, the elderly people thinking of economic level as bad have higher death anxiety than others thinking of it as average. Third, relationship between elderly people`s social activity and death anxiety showed that social activity participation of elderly people reduced death anxiety. The fewer elderly people`s social activity participation is, the higher death anxiety is.

Conclusion : The result of this study showed that death anxiety is reduced when elderly people`s social activity participation is high as above, and it means that activity theory is verified once again. It means that elderly people can conquest death anxiety by taking part in social activity, and that this participation lead them to lead a better life for their age. Therefore, we newly need to recognize a decrease of death anxiety for successful aging in the welfare field of the aged, and development of the program and supply should be realized to continue the social activity.
